Strength & Balance Classes

Description

At StayActive4Life we believe that everybody deserves the help and support to live a more active and healthy life.

Since October 2015 we have helped more than 4,000 people to build their strength and balance.

We know you want to keep on the move, feel better and have more energy.

To stay fit, healthy and active for longer we can help you to:

- Strengthen your muscles and become more flexible

- Maintain your balance so that you feel steady on your feet and reduce your risk of falls

- Have greater stamina and more energy so that you can live your life to the full.

The importance of being active in falls prevention

Maintaining muscle strength and balance is crucial in helping people stay mobile and independent as they get older, reduce their risk of falls and help them keep doing the daily activities that are important to them. Our approach is all about maintaining independence, building confidence, making friends and above all... having fun!

From the age of 40, people lose 8% of their muscle mass every decade and once over 70, this increases to 15% per decade. Peak muscle mass occurs even earlier – often in your 20s, which demonstrates the importance of focusing on activities that strengthen muscles throughout the life course.

Falls are common in people over 65 years old and are the leading cause of injury in this age group. Falls can have serious consequences including trauma, pain and reduced ability to carry out everyday activities. They can destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence.

Low muscle strength and poor balance are key risk factors in later life for having a fall. In the last two years in England, over a quarter of adults over the age of 60 and almost 40% of adults over the age of 80 reported a fall. Falls cause an estimated 95% of all hip fractures, which cost the NHS over £1 billion every year. There are over 65,000 hip fractures among people over 60 in England each year. Only a minority of hip fracture patients will completely regain their previous abilities and many require long-term care.

However falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. Strength, flexibility, balance and reaction time are considered the most readily modifiable risk factors for falls.

Regular physical activity can benefit your heart health, manage your weight, improve your muscle and joint functions, and positively affect your confidence and mental state. Not only will it help you manage and control existing conditions, but it will help protect you from developing other health complications too.

If you want to positively influence your health and wellbeing then our trained instructors are ready to get you started with a great variety of enjoyable physical activities to benefit your health.
